John and Bonnie DeWitt

John and Bonnie DeWitt

"Transferring IRA funds directly to the hospital allows us to make a gift and avoid the tax that would have been due if we'd taken the money from the fund ourselves"

says John DeWitt.

Retirement funds such as IRAs require the holder to take yearly distributions commencing at age 70½, and these distributions are subject to income tax. As a longtime business owner, John has experience making financial decisions. He recognized the benefits of using IRA distributions to provide philanthropic support.

"We feel a strong connection with the hospital and we're glad to support it," shares Bonnie DeWitt. "We trust them to use our dollars in exactly the way they promise." John and Bonnie DeWitt are long-time donors who are Medicus Society members of the President's Circle.

The DeWitts' connection can be traced back to Bonnie's volunteer experience at the hospital as a high school student. The couple's bond with us has grown, as John has been a patient here: In addition to three surgeries, "I've had a couple of cycling accidents that required trips to the emergency department," he says. John and Bonnie are grateful for the care he received.
